Last weekend I went to Ocean Isle Beach to get some sun and to walk the beach. While there I meet a unique friend. As I was laying down my towel this creature appeared out of the sand and started to move away very fast from me. I was quit surprised, fascinated and managed to get this picture.

Three years ago I took an advanced Visual Basic programming course at The University of Toledo and was very surprised at what it cost to take one 4 hour class. Today I read that college costs have risen 48% faster than the consumer price index since 1983. According to Forbes the federal government is at least partly to blame, because of federal tax credits, grants, and deductions and government subsidized loans have soared 151% over the past 10 years after inflation to $94 billion. Forbes reports that success on that front may owe something to their investment on lobbying, where they've outspent the real estate and oil and gas industries over the last 10 years. My wallet tells me that the cost can't keep going up, it has to slow but then again I will pay almost any price for my childern to graduate college.

Project VetAssist a private non-profit organization offering free on line service, guides vets and their survivors applying for the VA Improved Pension Program. Many years ago when I was much younger I didn't think or give a single care about credit card debt. I felt as long as I payed my credit card bill on time everything was in great shape. Credit cards were easy to get and the rewards were immediate...life was good and I had all the toys a man could want. Then I lost my job and the bottom feel out. I struggled to pay on time to avoid penalties and making the minimum payments I wasn't going anywhere fast. I keep thinking of the owner of the credit card company that issued the credit card and how he or she was on the beach enjoying life while I work very hard and payed for them to have fun. It was then that I decided to pay them off so I could go to the beach and have fun. So I closed them and concentrated on paying them off. I was lucky that I woke up and realized how much money I was giving away through interest. If anyone reading this needs help paying off credit cards then Debt relief is an option. Know matter if you have the money or if you need help getting rid of your credit cards...pay them off and start living debt free. Keep your money for yourself so you can enjoy the beach debt free and to heck with paying for someone else enjoying the beach on your hard earned money.

On May 9th I left Swanton Ohio headed to Wilmington NC to find a new job and a new life. On the way I spent several days sightseeing. I ended up in Moundville, West Virginia at the site of the largest Adena Culture Indian Mound in North America. This was my second side trip of the day:
Access to the mound was closed when I arrived...however I did manage to get several photos of the mound...awe inspiring!

While at the cemetery I visited;
Dedicated in 1901, Wade Memorial Chapel was built in honor of Jeptha Wade, founder of The Western Union Telegraph Company, by his grandson. The exterior was designed by W. Dominick Benes and Benjamin S. Hubbell. The interior was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The awe-inspiring window "The Flight of Souls" is the focal point in the Chapel's interior. The window is done in the Favrile technique developed by Tiffany, giving the glass an opalescence and iridescent quality by exposing it to chemicals and fumes of molten metals during the glass-blowing process. The mosaic on the chapel's west wall symbolizes the prophecy and law of the Old Testament.The mosaic on the east wall symbolizes the fulfillment of the law of the Prophets through the birth of Christianity.The Wade Chapel is a stunning piece of art. Everywhere there is symbolism...magnificent.

Lake View Cementary...John D. Rockefeller Memorial

While at the cemetery I visited;
John Davison Rockefeller began his career as an assistant bookkeeper for a Cleveland commission merchant. In 1863, Rockefeller entered the oil business, and in 1865 he left the commission business to work full-time in oil. He organized the Standard Oil Co. and became its largest stockholder when it was chartered in 1870. The oil business made him the richest man in the world, worth over $1 billion at the time of his death. He gave away $500 million dollars during his lifetime.
His grave is marked with a very simple headstone and I noticed there was coinage laying on top of it. I found out later that it is customary to leave loose change on the headstone...brings good luck. The tall, white-colored obelisk marks the family burial site.

On May 9th I left Swanton Ohio headed to Wilmington NC to find a new job and a new life. On the way I spent several days sightseeing. My first side trip was to Lake View Cemetery 12316 Euclid Avenue Cleveland Ohio. It was simply stunning... While at the cemetery I visited;

The Garfield Memorial the final resting place of the 20th President of the United States, James A. Garfield.
In the crypt directly below the Memorial Hall are the bronze caskets of President Garfield (draped with an American Flag) and his wife Lucretia.

President Garfield was shot July 2nd, 1881 in the Washington train station by a disappointed office seeker. Garfield died from his wounds on September 19, 1881, two months short of his 50th birthday.

I had a visitor today while walking Oak Openings Preserve. This beautiful Millard duck was forging for food as I walked up on him and as soon as he became aware or me..he tried to make a get-a-way. Spent the night boating up and down the Maumee River and Turkey Foot Creek area catching large catfish with my friend Joe. The moon was almost full...the waters and winds were calm making it very pleasurable night on the Maumee River. It was not a very successful night...the fish were not biting...however I did manage to catch one...coming in at a measly 15.5 pounds...LOL! What a thrill!!!

Recently my dads sister Ms. Clara Cox 85 years young was talking about her school years...it was wonderful hearing her talk about her childhood and her experiences in a one room school house in Jellico Tenn. She point out that when the older childern would learn something pertty much everyone learned it including the youngest of the group. She them recited a Rhyme just as if it was yesterday she learned it...the sparkle in her eyes spoke volumes.

Today Staff Sergeant Keith M. Maupin - POW*MIA 16-Apr-2004 was laid to rest after military authorities using DNA evidence identified and returned his body to his family. Maupin’s remain were found in Iraq, nearly four years after he was captured by insurgents. An Army general visited them and gave them the news, Keith parents said.

Maupin was a 20-year-old private first class when he was captured on April 9, 2004, after his fuel convoy was ambushed west of Baghdad. He had been driving a supply truck. Let us not forget this brave man and all the others that are following in his foot steps.

This wonderful lady is Nana Gibson of Laurinburg NC. I meet her 5 years ago and she has been a blessing in my life. Her body is frail but her mind is very sharp. She loves Carolina Basketball and can name all the players...I can't do that! I keep teasing her to call me whenever she get behind the wheel of a car..so I can get off the road..LOL! Whenever I'm home I invite her to come over to share stories and food with my family. I want her to feel loved and wanted and...if you live to be 93 years young you too can have blue hair...LOL! Seriously, I Love this lady and she bring joy to my heart...God Bless Nana Gibson!

Visiting the USS North Carolina Battleship in Wilmington NC...I came across this memorial honoring the memory of 52 US Submarines that were lost in WWII. I can relate to these men and some of their experiences because I too served in the subsurface fleet. Completing the professional requirements for qualifications in submarines...earning my silver dolphins and proudly serving my country.

On my walk today I can upon these three deer. These three deer actually approached me and stop roughly 40 feet away..it was truly awesome! We stared at each other for 5 minutes and that was after a park ranger drove her patrol car down the path I was walking and came between me and them. It's walks like these that really help me with my anxiety and stress as I struggle to find that rewarding job.

On 16 Feb 1944 Sixty Four years ago today 8 U.S. Army Paratroppers drowned on a night training exercise in Lake Kinney Cameron located in northern Scotland County, North Carolina. These men were part of the advance wave of young Americans trainning for the invasion of Europe who never made it to the battlefields but their sacrifice was not in vain and its an honor to pay my respects to these brave men.

Today on the job search front there is nothing to report. My unemployment has been shut off because my x-employer is paying me severance over a 4 week period instead of a lump sum and thus no unemployment for 4 weeks. As for insurance...I'm being compelled to pay for it myself and "Bay" will pay me back when I provide a paid receipt. Lets throw up more obstacles…kick a man when he is down! How can this be healthy for the employees that still work there? I know it’s not healthy for me! I managed to walk, ate light, and gave praise…I will be delivered! Amen!

This is Command 1st Sergeant John B. Leach (Ret. U.S. Army) standing beside the WWII Combat Glider Pilots Memorial at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airbase in Scotland County NC. This man started the Scotland County Association of Military Retirees in the 1980's and is instrumental in getting this memorial erected honoring these brave men. The Laurinburg-Maxton airbase was the largest glider training facility in the nation during WWII and saw thousands of America's young men.

Today I decided to leave off...the week and day...on the title. It doesn't fit well with the mental attitude that I'm trying to embrace! I don't want to look back or be constantly reminded of that day, therefore it will now be titled Job Search. I desire, want, crave, hope and any other adjective you can come up with...to look at this layoff as an opportunity...not as a misfortune. I need to say this to get it out of my system: Bay Controls Inc. stinks as a company!
I need not say more...Thank You Jesus...for saving me! Today..I managed to get one resume ready to send...MLK Day..no mail! Filed for this weeks weekly benefits, and signed up for a Veterans Job Search Workshop in February all done on the web.

Providence Dam located on the Maumee River was built in 1838 to provide water for the Ohio and Erie canal and played an important role in the development of Ohio. When the canal opened it provided a way for farmers to get their crops to the world and help turn this region into a bread basket. Providence Dam played an important role in that event.

Woke up this morning feeling good...my attitude...positive! Feel like I'm stating to come around..my concentration is getting better..Managed to read roughly 35 pages of "All Quiet on the Western Front"...walked two miles...and ate light. I've had a really bad cold...made worse by a visit to the dentist for a cleaning...that is starting to break up. Building this simple puzzle has been the best tool so far in helping me regain my concentration! It took roughly 12 hours to build...forcing my mind to concentrate on colors, shapes, and images. Did I mention it was fun...my son helped with the last 50 pieces and wants to do another puzzle...You know what? Something positive has happened...my son and I are doing another puzzle...that's a good thing! Managed to get one resume out today. Received several email from friends encouraging me...and I appreciate each and every one. Walked and managed to eat..not much..but its a start.

Woke up this morning feeling positive ..got up twice during the night but other than that I feel pretty good. I spent 10 minutes outside this morning with my binoculars looking at Mars and feeling awed...got myself showered and ate breakfast before 8am..I hope that means I coming around. Woke up every hour on the hour...anxious...forced myself to eat a piece of toast. Food doesn't sound good right now. Got thru to unemployment office and updated the missing personal information. Worked on resume..installing Yahoo messenger on all my computers so I can VOIP over the Internet...really neat tool...and its free..no phone bills...I like that. Worked on a 500 piece puzzle and am over half way through...putting it together has really helped me get my concentration back..hope to finish it by tomorrow. As the day wore on I felt better...

Didn't sleep well last night...woke up every 2 hours...finally got up at 5am. Woke up feeling very anxious...went outside and took 10 deep breaths..it helped for a few minutes.
Tried to call unemployment but couldn't get through to a person and I hate listening to the instructions: for English press 1...give me a break...and it just got worse! I don't know how people commit fraud...I'm having to jump through hoops...unreal! Does anyone out there know the magical short cut to talk to a person..it used to be press 0 and you would get someone?
Walked 3 miles and visited the "Window on Wildlife" at the park and saw many, many birds. Wasn't able to eat today..food just doesn't sound good! I started putting a 500 piece puzzle together trying to keep my mind active. I'm finding it extremely difficult to concentrate...I need my readers to encourage me!

Today is my 5th day unemployed and I don't like it! Had breakfast with a friend, then worked on my Linux PC connecting to the Internet. I like Linux...it can do some really cool things! Logged on to the unemployment site....updated information and answered corespondents. No resumes sent out...decided to put resume away for two days..then break out and redo. Hard to maintain a positive attitude...emotions all over scale..hope for the best.

I feel good today...woke up with a good attitude! Received some correspondence from the unemployment office today...something about my sons SS number and a pin number to register weekly on their web site. No resumes sent out today...worked on resume..searched the web, fine tuned several PCs and went to the dentist for a cleaning. To keep my mind busy I read 10 pages of the novel "All Quite on the Western Front" and did one maze puzzle and walked 3 miles. Freedom of Information Act...

I read today that Congress recently moved to expand the Freedom of Information Act by making records held by government contractors subject to the law and increasing the penalties for non-compliance. The house passed the legislation with a voice vote, and the Senate passed it 3 weeks ago. The bill restores disclosure standards that commits government agencies to releasing requested information unless there is a finding that such disclosure could do harm. We need more disclosure to prevent government abuses against the wishes of the people.

I walked this trail yesterday morning as part of my regiment to gaining employment. The walk started off pleasant enough with the Maumee River roaring on one side and birds singing on the other side of the canal. As I approached lock 43 of the canal..truck traffic became a distraction...so I left the trail and walked the banks of the river. It felt wonderful being close with nature.
Managed to get through to the Unemployment Office yesterday afternoon...because of unusually high call volume. Finished my resume...was difficult since my concentration is short. My goal is to get two resumes sent out per day and follow leads and suggestions from friends. Wish me luck and a positive attitude!!!

This was my first weekend unemployed and it was extremely rough. My emotions one minute calm the next minute very anxious! Church was very difficult...my heart and soul was not receptive to the message being delivered. I walked several miles but vaguely remember it. All my friends and family have offered encouragement and to help my mental state I've printed out this reminder:

My name is not important, my race, age, gender, have no bearings, what matters are my skills and abilities. Location is important, I live in NW Ohio in an area called Oak Openings part of The Maumee River Valley in the small town of Swanton, Ohio 25 miles west of Toledo, Ohio.

On Friday January 4, 2007 I was informed

Due to decreasing sales, the company has determined that it must reduce the size of its workforce and decrease expenses.

Yup...you guessed right! I'm the reduction to achieve the decreased expenses.

I have decided to share my experience with anyone who will read this blog. The good and the bad of having to find a new job beginning.

I think there are two ways to approach this opportunity. I can be negative (which is very hard not to be) or I can be positive (which is very hard to be).

I choose "Positive"! So follow me as I go down the unknown and as I fight the demons in my head that are holding me back to finding that job that is rewarding.

New Years Day walk...2008

On New Years Day 2008 I walked the towpath of the restored Ohio & Erie Canal located in Grand Rapids Ohio. This portion of the restored canal starts at Providence Metropark and goes for about a mile ending at Kimble's Landing where starting in May the public can ride a restored canal boat. The Maumee River was on one side and the canal on the other side a very nice walk on a brisk cool day.

This image was taken at Providence Metropark in Grand Rapids, Ohio three days ago. I find it disturbing that this trash is allowed to accumulate and nothing is done about it. I suspect the park officials hope that the river floods and takes this messy sight with it. It is absolutely amazing what the river will wash up.

I have fished at this dam since my youth and the memories I've made here are immeasurable. Blewett Falls Lake may be the largest undeveloped land-locked lake on the east coast and is the storage reservoir for the Blewett Falls Hydroelectric Development (FERC Project No. 2206). The Blewett Falls dam is located at approximately mile 195 on the Yadkin-Pee Dee River in Anson and Richmond counties in central North Carolina. The dam has a maximum height of about 50feet above the river bed.
The Blewett Falls development began operation in 1912 and is owned and operated by Progress Energy. The surface area of Blewett Falls Lake covers about 2,560 acres. At full pool elevation Blewett Falls Lake contains approximately 34 linear miles of shoreline. Total generating capacity of the hydroelectric plant is 22 MW.

Natures Beauty: Daylily

I found this beautiful daylily walking the grounds of St. Andrews Presbyterian College located in Laurinburg NC on Dec 23, 2007. The flowers of most species open at sunrise and wither at sunset, possibly replaced by another one on the same stem the next day. Daylilies varieties number in the thousands.

The rock was used by Native Americans as a place to hold their councils, and they met there before the battle with Anthony Wayne in 1794. The General built Fort Deposit on the nearby bluff of the river now a park in Waterville Ohio. The bridge was completed in 1908 and was considered an engineering marvel, and there was a lot of opposition to its partial destruction of the legendary rock (even then some people cared). An electric trolley ran across it connecting Toledo to points south for the next 30 years.

2007 Winter Storm in NW Ohio....

This winter storm barreled thought NW Ohio dumping 7 inches of snow in our area over a 18 hour period Saturday night into Sunday Morning. Sunday afternoon I managed to get into Oak Openings Metropark and walked this snow covered forest 2.5 mile trail. The crunch of snow under my feet along with the swirling winds rattling the upper branches of the trees made my adventure wonderful.

Early Archaic - 7,000 B.C. Bifurcate Point

This is one of the oldest documented bifurcates found in the eastern United States. It was excavated at the 6,880 B.C. levels at the St. Albans site in West Virginia where this type was named the St. Albans side notched point. This Archaic point was found in Providence Township, Lucas County NW Ohio Nov 28, 2007 by my friend Paul who used a 1908 silver dime he found as a reference.

I was looking for something unusual to photograph and the river did not disappoint. Rain has melted the ice storm we experience last week and the river is starting to rise and flow very fast. I saw this tree floating swiftly by and was past me before I could get the camera turned on. I did however manage to get this photograph showing a small piece of the strength of Mother Nature.

Anne Frank's tree given reprieve...

The chestnut tree that comforted Anne Frank while she hid from the Nazis during World War II was to be cut down Nov. 21 because it is too diseased to be saved was saved Tuesday by a Dutch judge who disagreed with Amsterdam officials about its safety and ordered the city and preservationists to negotiate to try and find a compromise that would save the tree.

On Thanksgiving Day my friend Paul invited me to walk two fields 100 acres each. This was our finding for that day. I found the two pieces on the left, the tip of a stone ax, and a point missing its tip. Paul found the killer Adena point (4,000 years old), a 1909 dime, a piece of slate (look closely see the drilled hole and tally marks) and a hide or bone scrapper, Paul was on a roll.

I read that on November 21 two spacewalking astronauts wired up the International Space Station's newest room and kept the next shuttle visit on track for early December. Commander Peggy Whitson and Daniel Tani spent hours connecting power and heater cables and fluid lines between the station and the Harmony compartment that was delivered by the shuttle in October. NASA cannot launch another shuttle until the bus-size harmony is hooked up. Atlantis is set to lift off Dec. 6 with a European lab that will dock to Harmony.

Virginia tribes....offer tributes

The governor for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Timothy Kaine, was given buck deer and other gifts by the Mattaponi and Pamunkey tribes at an annual ceremony, which honors the treaties of 1646 and 1677. The gifts are given to the governor every year on the day before Thanksgiving in lieu of taxes on the lands held by the tribes. Both the Mattaponi, one of the oldest reservations in America, and the Pamunkey tribes still live on state reservations.
